Things to Plant in February

Flower Plants: African Daisy (Arctotis), Alyssum, Anchusa (Summer Forget-Me-Not), Antirrhinum (Snapdragon), Bellis (English Daisy), Balloon Flower, Butterfly Weed, Calendula, Candytuft, Cornflower, Chrysanthemum, Cornflower, Delphiniym, Dianthus, Daisy (African, Michaelmas & Painted), Feverfew, Gallardia, Larkspur, Liatris, Edging Lobelia, Lobelia (Cardinal Flower), Mimulus (Monkey Flower), Nasturtium, Penstemon, Ornamental Cabbage and Kale, Pansy, Phlox (Drummondii and paniculata), Stock, Viola (Johnny-Jump-Up & Pansy).

FLOWER SEEDS: Alyssum, Calendula, Candytuft, Cosmos, Flowering Tobacco (Nicotiana), Four O’Clock, Gayfeather, Larkspur, Linaria, Marigold, Monkey Flower, Nasturtium, Penstemon, Petunia, Phlox (Drummond), Salvia, Stock (Dwarf), Verbena, Sweet Pea, Sweet William (Dianthus).

FRUIT: Bare root or container grown Pecans, Fruit trees, Grapes and Berry bushes.

Things to Do in February

Fertilize: Feed winter bloomers such as alyssum, dianthus and especially pansies. Fertilize maidenhair fern with bone meal.  Hydrangeas need lime now for pink flowers in the spring, aliminum sulfate for blue flowers.

WATER: Everything well before a freeze, but avoid overwatering.

TRANSPLANT: Bare root and container grown roses, shrubs, trees, groundcovers and vines. Move hardy seedlings outdoors. Divide and transplant perennial herbs and summer and fall blooming perennial flowers.  Donate extras to a plant sale .

PREPARE SOIL: Add compost and/or fertilizer. Till deeply. Send in soil samples (forms available at the Extension Office). Check winter mulch and replenish if needed. Stockpile leaves for mulch and composting throughout spring and summer.

LAWNCARE: Treat for brown patch if a problem with Terraclor or Daconil late in the month.  Repeat treatment in 3 to 4 weeks.

Diseases/PESTS TO LOOK FOR: Apply preemergent weed killer to lawn. Spray fruit trees with dormant oil just prior to bud break. Call Extension Office 512-473-9600 for fruit and nut trees spray schedule.

Other Things to Do in February

Time to get the garden ready for the new growing season. Clean, repair and replace garden tools.  Create a garden plan to help organize your chores and planting schedules. Have Lawn mower blade sharpened and oil changed.
